The United Arab Emirates faced heightened security concerns over the past 24 hours following reports of missile and drone activity in the region, including an incident involving a Kuwaiti-flagged tanker at Dubai’s main port, according to preliminary maritime security reports.
Port authorities in Dubai confirmed that emergency crews responded to a fire aboard the tanker late on Monday after what officials described as a suspected drone strike.
The fire was contained without casualties, authorities said, adding that an investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing. Maritime security firms operating in the Gulf described the incident as a “targeted disruption of commercial shipping,” though no group has claimed responsibility.
The incident prompted tighter security protocols at Jebel Ali Port, where vessel inspections were increased and some ships were temporarily held offshore, according to shipping sources.
Traffic through the port slowed as authorities implemented additional screening measures, contributing to delays in cargo handling and departure schedules.
Regional airspace was also affected. UAE civil aviation authorities issued precautionary advisories, leading several airlines to reroute flights or delay departures, according to airline and airport officials.
Passengers traveling through Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport reported delays of up to several hours, particularly on routes crossing the Gulf.
Logistics operators said the combined impact on maritime and air transport created short-term supply chain disruptions. Freight forwarders reported delays in time-sensitive shipments, including electronics and perishable goods, as cargo schedules were adjusted in response to evolving security conditions.
Despite the disruptions, industry officials emphasized that contingency systems remained effective even as alternative routing and inventory buffers helped maintain overall supply flow.
Energy markets reacted cautiously, with traders monitoring developments near key shipping lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz, according to market analysts.
UAE authorities said they are continuing to monitor the situation closely, maintaining heightened security while working to ensure the continuity of aviation and port operations.
