BoxBay System Gave Better Results with Less Planning: Patrick Bol

Global VP Port Expansion & Special Projects at DP World describes the journey of the BoxBay terminal

At TLME’s Future-Proof Technologies Conference held recently in Dubai, conference moderator Lars Jensen asked what were the practical improvements and positive developments seen in the operations at BoxBay compared to conventional terminals?

Patrick Bol, Global VP Port Expansion & Special Projects, DP World, the advantages of BoxBay were slowly emerging and its been an interesting journey to find out more and more. On the sustainability side, with solar panels BoxBay actually produces more energy than it consumes.

Mr Bol said that in a legacy container system one was always working with container number and position while the BoxBay system simply looked for the next available stacker crane.

In this way, the highbay storage system overcame the the Achilles heel of the yard system, which was inefficient workload distribution.

Current yard systems at best got 4 or 5 containers on to a truck per hour whereas the BoxBay system gave much higher throughput without so much time and effort put into detailed yard planning, concluded Mr Bol.
