Hutchison Ports Sohar to Roll Out Westwell Electric Trucks in Oman
Hutchison Ports Sohar is preparing to introduce a fleet of Westwell next-generation autonomous electric trucks as part of a major push to modernize operations and cut emissions at the busy Omani port.
The move positions Sohar as one of the first logistics hubs in the region to bring large scale smart e-trucking into daily terminal work. The e-trucks support fast charging and fully unmanned 5-minute battery swaps, enabling seamless 24/7 operations.
The trucks will be deployed across container handling operations, supporting round-the-clock movements while cutting fuel consumption and noise on site. Hutchison officials say the switch is part of a broader plan to boost efficiency through automation and align with Oman’s national sustainability goals.
Westwell, a China based smart logistics manufacturer, has been expanding its presence in Middle Eastern ports. Its e-trucks are powered by lithium battery systems and equipped with advanced autonomous driving software designed for the controlled environments of large terminals. The trucks operate on a centralized platform that coordinates routing, charging, and dispatching.
Sohar port executives say the technology will help cut turnaround times and improve safety by reducing human error in repetitive transport loops. The fully electric setup is expected to lower operating costs over the long term, with zero tailpipe emissions contributing to the port’s environmental targets.
The deployment fits into Hutchison Ports Sohar’s investment program aimed at meeting rising trade demand. With cargo volumes climbing, the port is betting that digital tools, automation, and clean energy equipment will strengthen its position as a strategic gateway on Oman’s northern coast.
The rollout of Westwell e-trucks marks a visible step toward a more efficient and cleaner logistics chain, and port leaders suggest more automation announcements may follow as Sohar scales up for the next decade of growth.
