South Korean liner Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) is to invest US$2.8 billion on 20 state of the art mega-ships to build one of the world’s most impressive fleets.
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) are to build twelve 23,000 TEU containerships respectively, according to reports.
The ships are expected to be delivered by Q2, 2020.
Hyundai Heavy Industries are billed to construct eight 15,000 TEU ships to complete the order.
A statement from HMM said: “On September 28th , HMM signed a formal contract for its twenty eco-friendly mega containerships with three shipyards - Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries.
“DSME and SHI will build seven and five 23,000 TEU containerships, respectively, which are expected for delivery in the second quarter of 2020. HHI will construct eight 15,000 TEU containerships to be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.
“The ceremonies were held with each shipbuilding companies and attended by CEO and President of DSME Mr. Sung Leep Jung, President & Inside Director of HHI Mr. Sam Hyun Ka and President & CEO of SHI Mr. Joon Ou Nam including President & CEO of HMM Mr. Chang Keun Yoo.”
