UNCTAD: Ports Need Action on Climate

Shipping faces wild weather and emissions hikes

Transformation in ports is needed if the world trade system is to cope with the projected impacts of climate change, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

UNCTAD’s Chief of Policy and Legislation, Regina Asariotis, said: “The hardest hit areas, coastlines, will affect us all since the lion’s share of trade itself is managed through international shipping and ports.”

Asariotis was speaking at a meeting at the COP24 global climate summit in Katowice, Poland.

Ms. Asariotis also said that “all actors” in the ocean economy must face the reality of climate change, adding that it effects trade and the sustainable development prospects of all countries.

Shipping faces a tricky situation with regard to climate change.

On one hand, excess emissions damage the environment, on the other, rising sea levels and extreme weather is affecting shipping routes.

Further still, demand is consistently increasing and the world needs shipping to thrive.
