Dubai International Airport has made the top ten of the busiest airports in the world after the Airports Council International (ACI) released a definitive top twenty list of cargo-handling airports.

The list shows that Dubai International Airport is the only Middle Eastern airport in the top ten, and that it has exhibited a 2.4% growth in cargo on 2017’s figures.

The top three places are taken by US and China airports, with Hong Kong in first, Memphis (USA) in second and Shanghai (China) in third.

With the plans of the Dubai government to bring more trade and people to the UAE over the next few years, Dubai International Airport is likely to grow even further.

Despite being the sixth busiest airport overall, Dubai International Airport is the busiest airport in the world operating with only two runways.

In 2017, it handled 2.65 million tonnes of cargo and registered 409,493 aircraft movements.

Dubai International Airport is situated in the Al Garhoud district, 4.6km east of Dubai and spread over an area of 2,900 hectares of land.

Despite oceangoing trade monopolizing the movement of cargo worldwide, the advancement of technology and online shopping has seen a global customer base increasingly turn to instant buying with an expectation of quick delivery.

Such a situation is proving a lucrative opportunity for air-based cargo companies that can outpace their ocean-based rivals.
