Dubai Airport Temporarily Shuts Down Following Drone Attack
A suspected drone attack near Dubai International Airport early today forced authorities to temporarily suspend flights at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, disrupting travel across the Middle East and beyond.
The incident occurred at approximately 4 am local time when a drone struck a fuel storage tank in the vicinity of Dubai International Airport (DXB).
The impact triggered a large fire that sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky and prompted an immediate emergency response from Dubai Civil Defence teams. Authorities said the fire was brought under control within hours and no injuries were reported.
Officials quickly halted all flight operations at the airport as a precaution while emergency crews worked to contain the blaze and assess the damage. Roads surrounding the airport were temporarily closed and security measures were tightened across the area.
The disruption had an immediate ripple effect on global aviation. Several inbound flights were diverted to nearby airports, including Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), while others were forced to return to their departure cities mid-flight.

Airlines including Emirates, Air India and other international carriers cancelled or rescheduled flights scheduled to depart from or arrive at DXB.
Dubai International Airport handles tens of millions of passengers each year and serves as a critical transit hub connecting Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Even a short suspension of operations can disrupt global travel schedules, affecting thousands of passengers and cargo shipments worldwide.
Authorities later confirmed that flight operations would gradually resume after safety checks were completed and the fire was fully extinguished. By late morning, limited services had begun returning to normal, although officials warned that delays and cancellations were expected throughout the day.
The attack comes amid escalating tensions across the Middle East linked to the broader regional conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. The UAE has experienced repeated drone and missile threats in recent weeks, with airports, ports and energy infrastructure viewed as potential targets.
Security analysts say the latest strike highlights the vulnerability of major civilian infrastructure to drone warfare, particularly in a region already experiencing heightened military activity and airspace restrictions.
Authorities in Dubai have urged residents and travelers to rely only on official updates as investigations continue into the origin of the drone and the circumstances surrounding the attack. Meanwhile, airlines and airport officials are working to restore full operations and minimize the ongoing disruption to passengers.
