Shanghai Smashes World’s Busiest Port Record 

Shanghai has now been the world’s busiest port for 9 years running

Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. Ltd. (SIPG) has reported a higher level of traffic than 2017 for 2018, meaning it holds its crown as China’s and the world’s busiest port, according to Xinhua, China’s state news service.

SIPG operates all the public container and bulk terminals in the Port of Shanghai and reported to Xinhia that it reached a massive 42.01 million TEU for 2018.

The record means Shanghai has now been the world’s busiest port for 9 years running.

While China has many of the world’s top ten busiest ports (seven), it has continued to push an ambitious global strategy.

While developing its Belt and Road Initiative - the move to reawaken the historic maritime silk route - it has also invested in many ports globally.
