Egypt has marked another milestone in its ambitious maritime infrastructure programme with the commencement of commercial operations at the Trans Cargo general cargo terminal at Sokhna Port, reinforcing the country's strategy to establish itself as a leading regional logistics and transit trade hub.
The terminal has already welcomed its first commercial vessels, including the Century Eagle, a bulk carrier arriving from China, and the Transmar Legacy, which sailed from Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Islamic Port.
Earlier, the Chipolbrok Sun became the first vessel to berth at the terminal after operations began, delivering the facility's principal 150-tonne crane and other cargo-handling equipment required for full-scale operations.
According to Egypt's Ministry of Transport, the new terminal is designed to significantly expand Sokhna Port's general cargo handling capacity, shorten vessel waiting times and improve operational efficiency through modern cargo-handling systems that meet international standards.

The facility is expected to support both Egypt's growing foreign trade and its ambitions to capture a larger share of regional transit cargo.
The Trans Cargo terminal forms part of the wider redevelopment of Sokhna Port, one of Egypt's flagship infrastructure projects located on the Gulf of Suez at the southern entrance to the Suez Canal.
The broader expansion includes new specialised terminals, additional berths, deeper navigation basins, and enhanced road and rail links as part of the integrated Sokhna–Alexandria logistics corridor connecting the Red Sea with the Mediterranean.
Egyptian authorities view the investment as a key component of the country's long-term strategy to transform its ports into globally competitive logistics gateways capable of serving larger vessels and increasing cargo throughput.
With commercial operations now underway, the Trans Cargo terminal is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Sokhna Port while supporting Egypt's broader vision of becoming a major logistics, maritime and industrial hub linking Africa, Europe and Asia.
