The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is blazing a trail in drone-enabled transport and logistics, leveraging advanced technology to reshape delivery, mobility, and cargo operations.

From pioneering trials in urban zones to launching vertiport infrastructure, the nation is transforming its skies into vibrant logistics corridors.

Launch of the Middle East’s First Drone Delivery System

On 18 December 2024, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum officially launched the Middle East’s first-of-its-kind drone delivery system at Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO).

At the inauguration His Highness said: “The future of robotic technologies and self-driving systems for retail services, and knowledge-based economic applications, innovation, digital transformation and the use of artificial intelligence have all become a reality in Dubai.”

This initiative underscores Dubai’s dedication to becoming a future‑ready city through technological innovation.

It aligns with multiple strategic programs such as the Dubai Program to Enable Drone Transportation, the Dubai Robotics and Automation Program, and other AI- and R&D-driven initiatives, which are all intended to cultivate digital transformation and smart mobility.

BVLOS Trials at Dubai Silicon Oasis

In October 2023, DSO hosted a groundbreaking three‑week Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone delivery trial led by UAE-based Jeebly LLC and Skye Air Mobility from India.

EANAN Successfully Completes Drone Test Flight of Heavy Cargo UAV

This trial, part of the Dubai Program to Enable Drone Transportation (initiated in November 2021), served as a real-world testbed for advanced logistics, robotics, and autonomous systems.

The collaboration involved the Dubai Future Foundation, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, DSO authority, and other stakeholders, who worked together to refine regulatory frameworks and operational standards for commercial drone use in logistics.

The trials showcased the potential to enhance efficiency and sustainability, delivering small to medium packages while aligning with global postal standards.

Drone Logistics in Maritime Operations

Expanding beyond urban delivery, the maritime sector is also embracing drone solutions. Gulf Navigation Holding (GULFNAV) and Wings Logistics Hub are collaborating to deploy intelligent autonomous drones, eVTOLs, and AI technologies across UAE ports.

The partnership aims to streamline shipping services - transporting light and heavy cargo, ferrying personnel, supporting firefighting efforts, and enabling mapping and surveillance (even offshore).

This move is expected to upend traditional crew-boat operations by offering a more cost-effective, fuel-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative by reducing carbon emissions and overcoming logistical constraints in the maritime domain.

Vertiport Infrastructure: A Bold Step Forward

In February this year, Abu Dhabi’s drone ecosystem advanced further with a joint initiative by LODD and Skyports Infrastructure to unveil vertiport concept designs.

These vertiports, planned at Al Bateen, Yas Island, and Khalifa Port, will integrate autonomous aerial logistics and eVTOL operations into the emirate’s transport network.

Supported by feasibility studies and regulatory groundwork involving over 34 stakeholders, this project lays the infrastructure for both cargo and passenger aerial mobility, positioning Abu Dhabi as a global leader in advanced air mobility.

Forward-Thinking: Last-Mile Deliveries and Beyond

With so many projects on the ground, the UAE has signaled its readiness to pioneer last‑mile drone deliveries. Across the country the convergence of public-private partnerships, visionary strategy, and robust infrastructure is propelling drone logistics into a defining feature of modern transport.

From launching the region’s first drone delivery network in Dubai Silicon Oasis, through maritime applications, to vertiport-enabled air mobility in Abu Dhabi, drones are proving to be catalysts for efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in logistics.

As mapping and regulation continue to evolve, full-scale deployment, including eVTOL passenger services, will redefine both transport and logistics operations in years ahead.
