From Dubai to Memphis: How Smart Airport Infrastructure Powers Global TradeA Boeing 747-400 freighter operated by Turkey’s ACT Airlines on behalf of Emirates SkyCargo crashed into the sea after veering off the runway during landing at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) early Monday morning.
The aircraft, operating flight EK9872 from Dubai to Hong Kong, was attempting to land on Runway 25L amid heavy rain and strong crosswinds at around 8:50 a.m. local time when it reportedly lost control.
According to airport officials, the jet veered sharply to the left, overran the runway, and plunged into the waters of the South China Sea just beyond the airport perimeter.
As the plane came off the runway it struck a ground security vehicle killing two guards. All four crew members were rescued and taken to hospital. There was no cargo onboard.
Witnesses described the landing as unstable, with the aircraft appearing to bounce before skidding sideways. “It hit the ground hard, then slid off the edge - it happened so fast,” said one airport ground worker.
Video circulating online shows the aircraft’s tail and part of its fuselage protruding from shallow water, surrounded by rescue boats and floating debris. Airport officials confirmed a small fuel spill, which has since been contained.
TheHong Kong's Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has launched an investigation. Initial weather reports from the Observatory indicate strong crosswinds and visibility below 1,000 meters at the time of the incident.
Emirates issued a statement expressing “deep concern” and confirmed it is working closely with ACT Airlines and local authorities.
All cargo operations at Hong Kong International Airport have been temporarily suspended pending recovery and safety inspections.
